Wonder Haven Nursery, was an absolute Wonder to work with!!!
The owner is such a positive, creative burst of energy and it was an honour for MK Kids Interiors to create the concept for their first day nursery in Isle of Dogs, Canary Wharf in London.
Wonder Haven Pre-School/ Day Nursery caters for children from 1 – 4 years old.
The Brief:
Wonder Haven, is to be a fun space where children to be free to learn through play and exploration.
Needs to have:
Classrooms (x 3) to host 26 children and a welcoming Reception area
Baby room (1-2years) will have 5 children, toddler room (2-3 years) will have 12 children, pre-school (3-4 years) will have 9 children
Prefered Colour scheme: teal, orange/ mustard
As is standard with MK Kids, we had to design a reception/ entrance that “wowed” children, and visitors, whilst maintaining a practical entrance. We suggested pendant lighting entwined with greenery. The main walls are a duckegg blue with bursts of mustard semi-circles and curved colour blocks. The desk we prosposed was a ‘Welcome’ block, with W E L C O M E in 3D lettering. Due to time constraints and wanting a more flexible space, the clients chose a simple desk, that can be removed.
File storage and display were a priority, therefore we proposed a peg board wall and filing cabinet behind the desk. An additional ‘welcome sign was installed above the window.’
Our clients wanted to incorporate greenery on the stairway, so we proposed a two in one curved light fixture and planter.
We proposed a terrazzo vinyl flooring for the stair way and the toilets.
Did you know that babies see only black & white, and contrasting black and white lines draws their attention and creates focus? Black & white can also gives a mature feel, we wanted to soften that and make it more child-centric, with touched of mint and pink.
The main feature carried throughout all 3 rooms were the 3D lettering for the room name and the coat pegs. The cloud light and playful animal characters add to the ambience.
We created an enclosure for the changing area with a terrazzo splash black and added lower sinks accessible for toddler.
The pre-school room was inspired by the name ‘Shining Stars’, and a space theme. We proposed astronaut lights and astronauts vinyls. We continued, the semi circular theme upstairs, into these rooms.
Using the walls we maximised storage with cube storage, which can also act as a divider, should the clients wish to separate the zones. The image below shows the messy corner with tables and an easel for mark making activities,
To high light the importnce of literacy, we created a feature walls with a book display. books can be stored on the wall and under the bench.
This section of the room features the role play, nature and contruction corners.
Supermoon took the form of mountains with the moon behind them, we also proposed our authentic model solar system mobiles, for added visual interest for the children.
The mountains were proposed to accentuate the triangular style of the windows. The lighting was proposed for it’s simplicity and moon light shape and ambiance.
